Macclesfield, nestled in the foothills of the Peak District, has an architectural jewel in its town. St Alban's Parish Church is an early example of the work of renowned architect and designer Augustus Welby Pugin who, in 1838, designed the beautiful church in the Gothic Revival style. Just eight years later he went on to design the interior of the Palace of Westminster, commonly known as the Houses of Parliament.
There has been a thriving Roman Catholic community on the Chester Road site for over 200 years. We are determined to preserve Pugin's creation not only for the benefit of our Parish family but also for our local community and beyond. We are determined to keep St Alban's church a living part of England's heritage.
Thanks to the National Lottery Players, we have a national Heritage Lottery Fund. It is with a Heritage Lottery grant, a ten-thousand pound grant from the National Churches Trust and energetic fundraising by St Alban's current parishioners, urgent work will begin on the church tower. At a cost of almost £300,000, the work could take up to two years to complete.
This beautiful historic church has all the dignity and delight one would expect from a Pugin building. However even more wonderful is the warmth and welcome that exudes from the priests and congregation during the Eucharist and other services. Well worth several visits.
Such a welcoming Catholic community in the heart of Macclesfield in the foothills of the Peak District. Wonderful Masses, vibrant prayer groups and super social activities. The beautiful historic Church designed by Pugin glorifies God's love. Visit is a must.
Wonderful church to visit not only for its architecture but also its warm welcome to visitors from out of town and those who have lost the way.

What a beautiful beautiful church!!!! I sat in the pew quietly reflecting on what a fine building it is and how it has a real sense of peace and calm. Planning to return for a service as soon as I can.
Amazing design. Very friendly. On main road. Easy acres. An architectural gem if nothing else. Well worth a visit. Ring for opening times or try a service details on the board outside.
This early work of Palace of Westminster architect, AW Pugin, is impressive enough when viewed from the busy Chester Road, but inside you find a visual treat. There is a perfect balance of symmetry and embellishment which stimulates quiet contemplation. Stunning stained glass works as you would expect, but the altar and side altar are both beautiful and interesting. Open until 3pm each weekday and for Masses throughout the weekends. Well worth a visit, you will feel uplifted.
